Basic Compass Skills

Key to your usage and enjoyment of this site is the ability to read and determine direction using a compass. Use the following link to provide you with those basic skills. If you do not have a compass with you at the park, the Roxborough Visitor Center maintains a special orienteering box that contains several. These are available to you at no cost. Simply leave a driver’s license or official form of identification at the center, which will be returned to you when you are finished using the compass. From the links below, simply use your back arrow to return to this page.

Measurements

Another critical part of orienteering is the ability to determine distance and measurements. This will help you out.

DETERMINING TRAVELING DISTANCES…To determine DISTANCE, go to the end of the patio squares near the Visitor Center sundial.  Beginning with the far edge (against the pavement), step off with your left foot first and count the number of times you put your right foot down in order to get to the end of the 16th stone.  This will be the number of your paces to walk 10 yards.  Multiply this number by 10 to find the places you would need to walk in order to go 100 yards.  Important if your directions provide distances.
